Barn door measuring guide for door openings with casing molding.
Barn door rough opening dimensions.
While the style of barn door you choose will come down to your personal preference you will need to be aware of barn door vs opening dimensions when making your choice.
Measure from inside to inside of the opening.
Framing rough opening sizes are really quite simple.
Measure from the header to the floor to determine the door length you need.
This is the distance between the right and left sides of the rough opening in feet and inches to the closest fraction of an inch.
So if you have a bedroom door that is 30 wide which is considered a 2 6 or 2 6 door just add 2 to the width and frame it 32 wide.
Generally most standard barn doors are approximately 36 x 84 or 42 x 80 with enough extra lip to overlap most standard door frames 36 x 80 by an inch or so.
This will give you room to space the door frame off of the sub floor.
Measure inside dimensions of the door jamb.
Add 4 to the measurement and you have your recommended door width.
For instance if you have a 16 door and are using river stones that are approximately 2 to 2 1 2 you will want the rough opening to be roughly pun intended 16 6.
Your door s width should be 2 to 3 inches wider than the door opening and 1 inch higher than the dimensions of your opening.
This can be done with an existing door finished opening or a rough opening where you can see the 2x4 s.
Now all you need to know is how to properly frame your door rough opening.
However we realize that not everyone has standard door openings so we offer several sizes of sliding barn doors to help fit your needs with the following measurements.
Ideally the door will cover 2 to 3 inches beyond the opening on each side.
The determining factor in how high or how wide you want to go is just how much you want your sliding door to overlap with the opening.
36 x 80 36 x 84.
In this example the opening width is 32 4.
While a standard door height is 80 finished opening.
The difference between a rough opening and finished opening is usually 2 3 inches.
To determine the proper door width add about 4 to 6 inches to your measurement.
The finished opening measurement will be.
Add 1 to 2 per door for overlap depending on privacy needs.
Sheetrocked opening no trim or casing width.
Total door width will be 36.
To figure out what size track you need double your final width measurement.
Measure from outside to outside of casing molding.
For reference standard interior door widths range from 24 36 finished opening.
Just add 2 to the width of the actual door size.
Measure across for the width and from the top of the casing molding to the floor for height.
Then measure the height from the floor to the bottom of the header.
